Update from Katie Grassa, Principal, Curley K-8

Dear Curley Families:

I hope you are enjoying summer and spending lots of time having fun, relaxing, playing and doing some summer reading. I know that there are many more questions than answers regarding the start of school in September. This is a challenging time for us all and I want to share up to date information as soon as I can with each of you.

Our Superintendent, Dr. Cassellius, released a DRAFT of the BPS reopening plan. I encourage families to read this document as a way to help understand some potential plans for the fall. In the coming weeks Dr. Cassellius will reach out to you to make some choices for your family and this will give you time to process the information. This is a 63 page document and while all the information is important I want to highlight some pages which align with questions I have been receiving from families. Reviewing this information will best prepare families for the decision making process this coming school year. It will also help you to continue to have conversations with your child(ren) around what school may look like at the start of this year.

  • Summary of Available Learning Models – pages 20-25 – These pages will help families understand what options the central office is planning for Fall 2020.
  • Health and Safety Requirements – pages 29-33 – These pages will help families understand the safety protocols put in place for families prior to sending their child to school each day as well as once they arrive at school.
  • Operationalizing the Plan – pages 33-40 – These pages will help families understand the operational shifts which include: transportation, building entry, common spaces, sanitation and restroom usage.
  • Curricula – pages 46-57 – These pages will help families understand the instructional shifts across curricula, specialty offerings, grade level bans as well as thinking about lost learning for students this spring. This section also addresses the plans for supporting for English Language Learners and Students with Disabilities as well as tracking attendance, grades and assessing students’ understanding of the standards taught.

I want to thank all the families who have reached out with ideas and support for the fall. I am grateful to work in a community that believes in public education and supports its local school. I know that this school year will be different than any other year, however I am confident that we will have a great school year.

I continue to wish you all a healthy and safe summer break.

Sincerely,
Katie Grassa
