SPC Fun Run: 

This year, the Curley K-8, in collaboration with our School Parent Council, will host a Fun Run for all students on Friday, May 19. The goal of the Fun Run is to provide a fun outdoor activity for our students, and to raise money to support programs here at the Curley.

The Curley Performing Arts 

As we get closer to the musical on May 15-19th, I have set up a page for Volunteer Needs – Into the Woods.

A summary of our volunteer needs include:

• Help backstage during daytime and evening performances with quick changes and to supervise students backstage
• Videotaping both cast A and B (not on sign up genius)
• Concessions—Including a bake sale (see above)**
• Ticket sales
• Creating posters, and the program for the event (not on sign up genius)
• Social media publicity (not on sign up genius) 

**Help coordinate a bake sale / concession, to raise money for our musical theater program. This concession would be for both evening shows and possibly one of the school shows. Raising money would allow us to expand our musical theater program next year, to include a middle school musical component.

Schoolyard Improvement Committee

Thanks to all who came out last Sunday, the 16th, to help install the dry riverbed on the drainage trench near the Lower School entrance! It was so much fun collaborating on an effort to beautify the school grounds.Please join us on Sunday, May 21st, from 10am-12pm. We will have pizza at 12 noon and an optional ball game afterwards! We will use more of our Love Your Block grant money to beautify/improve the Curley grounds. Summer programs for 2023 are now available.

Explore and register:

2. Find the ones that interest you and your student. Our schools and partners are offering exciting opportunities to learn, explore, and grow.
3. Be sure to check out “Eligibility/Registration” to see if your child qualifies.
   Note: Some programs are open to all BPS students, some for certain ages, and others are by invitation only.

Safe Parking at Arrival

Hello Curley Families, we want to remind you all that no cars are allowed on Pershing Road on

school days between 7:45 and 8:45 am and 2:45 and 3:45 pm. During these times, buses drop off and pick up students quickly. Having cars makes it unsafe for our students. 

Parking is available at:

• In the parking lot across from the Centre Street entrance
• On Spring Park Ave (Please remember: Do not park on sidewalks – this is dangerous for the children)
• On Moraine Street
• On Lochstead Ave 

Please remember to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalks or waiting to use the crosswalks. 

School-Based Inclusion Team: 

The School-Based Inclusion Planning Team is a team of educators and parents who meet weekly to collaborate and plan for the implementation of inclusion at Curley K-8.  Together, we are following a district-wide process to make recommendations on the implementation of inclusion across our school.  Below is the process the team will be following.

Curley Library: 

Hello from the Curley Library!

Curley Students (and teachers) are busy here in the Curley Library!  We are celebrating Women’s History Month!  Students are exploring the library catalog with the brand new library computer (thanks donorschoose!). Students will soon be reading about lego and Star Wars characters in the new “Pop Culture Beginning Reader Collection.”  Students are coming on their own and with their classes, learning library skills, and checking our great books!  Please click here for a more detailed update on happenings from the Curley library. 

Curley Website Update: 

The Website Committee is underway with their work. The committee will revise content and reformat the dropdown menu in the coming weeks. We wanted to give everyone a heads-up if you noticed things looked different. We hope to create a staging site (a separate domain that functions as a website but has a different URL) to avoid altering the current website as we tinker, but we haven’t yet figured out if this is possible.  We appreciate your patience as we begin our work!  

After-School Opportunities:

• Tenacity Grades 6-8 – Tenacity’s Ace Academy is an intensive program for students in grades 6-8 that focuses on improving students’ academic, tennis, and fitness skills, while simultaneously nurturing social/emotional development and engaging families. Tenacity has been at the Curley K-8 for over 10 years and is a FREE after-school program Monday-Thursday from 3-6 pm and Fridays from 3-5 pm.   • ChopChop Family cooking magazine have recently published their Spring 2023 listing, full of family-friendly recipes and cooking tips. 

• District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC) Conference
  • OMME’s Parent Team will host the DELAC virtual annual conference on Tuesday, June 13, 2023 from 6:00-8:00pm on Zoom. Guest speaker and presenter Dr. María Luisa Parra-Velasco, Harvard University Professor  will have an interactive discussion on “How to engage with our child/teen’s school and why it is important”. • Know Your Rights Webinar for Immigrant Workers on May 3
  • Did you know that employers cannot pay you less than $15 per hour in Massachusetts? Did you know that your employer must pay you for all hours you work? Did you know that it is illegal for your employer to retaliate against you for reporting unsafe conditions or wage theft? Did you know that all workers have labor rights, regardless of immigration status?
  • The Worker Empowerment Cabinet and MOIA are hosting a webinar on Wednesday, May 3 from 6-7:30pm. Lawyers and government officials will explain your rights on the job and answer questions. Interpretation will be available in Spanish, Portuguese, Cantonese, as well as other languages upon request. Register here.
