MAP Testing for Exam Schools (Grades 5 and 7)

BPS selected the NWEA MAP Growth Reading and Mathematics assessment as the admissions test for the exam schools (BLA, BLS, and O’Bryant). BPS students already take the NWEA MAP Growth assessment

up to three times at their current school as part of district-required testing to help schools and teachers inform academic instruction, as well as assess student growth. However, only the test scores from specific test administrations are eligible for consideration in exam school admissions.

The next administration of MAP Growth will take place  for students in grades 5 and 7 during the normal school day on:

  • Tuesday, May 30, 2023, (ELA)
  • Wednesday , May 31st, 2023 (MATH)

*** All make-up tests will take place the week of June 5th****

Pre-registration for the test is not required. The test scores from this test administration will be used for the exam school admissions AND provide schools with important information regarding your child’s progress since the start of school. Makeup testing will be available if the student is unable to be assessed during the first week.

Playground Improvement Updates:

There would be a community engagement process that the landscape architects would guide us through starting in the fall.  This would involve input from teachers, students, and parents/other interested community members so that a final design can be reached.  Construction will take place next summer (2024), so the playground will be ready for SY 2024-2025.

Curley Library:

Hello Curley Families,

Happy May!!  Although allergy season is at its worst for many of us, I admire the persistence of our Curley readers.  They read and enjoy great books, even through itchy eyes!

Here are a few updates from the library:

  1. Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month- Happy AAPI Heritage month!  This month is an incredible opportunity to celebrate the contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to American history, and to have conversations with students about #StopAsianHate and why it matters.  More information, teacher resources, videos and the May AAPI Heritage Month Challenge, can be found here
  2. Return Books: Please help your child return books that they are no longer using.
  3. Summer Reading:  I am starting to get inquiries about summer reading lists.  Everything you need to know about Curley’s summer reading program can be found on the library website.  I will update this resource more and more as we get closer to the Summer, so keep your eyes peeled for Boston Public Library programs, which will also be posted on our library website

Safe Parking at Arrival

Hello Curley Families, we want to remind you all that no cars are allowed on Pershing Road on

school days between 7:45 and 8:45 am and 2:45 and 3:45 pm. During these times, buses drop off and pick up students quickly. Having cars makes it unsafe for our students.

Parking is available at:

  • In the parking lot across from the Centre Street entrance
  • On Spring Park Ave (Please remember: Do not park on sidewalks – this is dangerous for the children)
  • On Moraine Street
  • On Lochstead Ave

Please remember to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalks or waiting to use the crosswalks.

School-Based Inclusion Team:

The School-Based Inclusion Planning Team is a team of educators and parents who meet weekly to collaborate and plan for the implementation of inclusion at Curley K-8.  Together, we are following a district-wide process to make recommendations on the implementation of inclusion across our school.  Below is the process the team will be following.

For more information on what the team is doing, you can check out the weekly updates. Please view the following document: Curley K-8 SBIPT Communication to Staff/Families

Curley Website Update:

The Website Committee is underway with their work. The committee will revise content and reformat the dropdown menu in the coming weeks. We wanted to give everyone a heads-up if you noticed things looked different. We hope to create a staging site (a separate domain that functions as a website but has a different URL) to avoid altering the current website as we tinker, but we haven’t yet figured out if this is possible.  We appreciate your patience as we begin our work!

After-School Opportunities:

  • Tenacity Grades 6-8 – Tenacity’s Ace Academy is an intensive program for students in grades 6-8 that focuses on improving students’ academic, tennis, and fitness skills, while simultaneously nurturing social/emotional development and engaging families. We are accepting new students and encourage students to apply. Please reach out to our Site Director, Kimberly Salazar, via email kimberlysalazar@tenacity.org or by phone at 857-350-7175.
