BPS FOOD WASTE REDUCTION PROGRAM

Look at the three bins: the green (composting), the blue for recycling and the grey for trash.

Dear  Curley Parents and Caregivers,

The Curley K-8 School is going to be part of a growing number of schools whose aim is to reduce the amount of waste produced at lunch. The composting itself will happen offsite, but at our school we are going to separate certain items.  Our school will start this program on Monday, January 29, 2024.

There are going to be 3 containers: green, blue and gray.

The green container will be used for food waste and compostable materials.

The blue container will be used for recyclable materials.

The gray container will be used for regular trash and trays.

What’s compostable?

Food leftovers, fruits and vegetables, dairy products, meats, bones, fats (small amounts), napkins. It is very important that only compostable items are put into green containers. Trash and recycling will contaminate the food waste collected and result in fees for BPS and food waste being trashed.

What’s not compostable?

Plastic wrap and plastic bags; plastic, metal, or glass of any kind; bottles and cans; straws; snack bags; liquids; styrofoam, and trays.

Thank you in advance for your support of the food waste reduction pilot at your school. Waste-reduction strategies will require changes in our behaviors – a little effort will make a big difference in protecting our environment and ensuring all students and staff attend healthy and sustainable schools.

We had our third and last in-person preview for our future parents this past Tuesday, January 23. We had a large number of parents interested in visiting our k1 and k2 classrooms. Principal Grassa addressed the group of parents followed by a time for questions and answers. Then they took a tour of our school and left impressed. I showed them the playground and told them that our present Curley Parent Council members were working with a 1 million grant that would pay for the construction of a brand-new playground for our lower school students.
