Hispanic Heritage Month Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated from September 15 to October 15, honors the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. It’s a time to celebrate diversity and promote awareness of the significant impact of Hispanic culture in the United States. This year at the Curley, we’re excited to highlight some delicious recipes from our community! We’ll be sharing these cherished dishes for you to try at home. Please send us pictures of your families enjoying the recipes—we can’t wait to see your creations! This week, the focus is on AREPAS- which originated in Colombia and Venezuela. Ingredients 2 cups PAN arepa flour (pre-cooked corn flour) 2 ½ cups warm water 1 tsp salt1 tbsp vegetable oil (optional, for added richness) 2 cups of shredded cheeseInstructions 1.In a large bowl, combine the PAN flour and salt. Gradually add the warm water while stirring with your hands or a spoon until the dough comes together. 2. Knead the dough gently for about 1-2 minutes until it’s smooth and pliable. If the dough feels too dry, add a little more water; if it’s too wet, sprinkle in a bit more flour. Then add the shredded cheese and mix again. 3. Divide the dough into 6-8 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball and then flatten it into a disk about ½ inch thick. 4. Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Lightly grease it with oil if desired. Cook the arepas for about 5-7 minutes on each side, until golden brown and crispy on the outside. 5. Optional: Let the arepas cool slightly, then slice them open and fill them with your favorite ingredients, such as cheese, avocado, beans, or shredded meat. |
COMMUNITY RESOURCES
Support Local Latinx Restaurants |
Jamaica Plain has a rich history of Latino community involvement that has shaped its cultural landscape. In the late 20th century, many Latino families, particularly from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Central America, began to settle in the area. Over the years, local organizations and events have emerged, celebrating Latino culture through festivals, art, and education, fostering a vibrant and diverse community. Today, Jamaica Plain continues to thrive as a hub of Latino culture, reflecting its historical roots and ongoing contributions.
This week, the focus is restaurants. Eateries to visit and support on Center St. During Latine Heritage Month (and the other 11 months of the year)
Alex’s Chimis:
- 385 Center St. Jamaica Plain, MA- Chimis, Spanish for a sandwich, is how this spot humbly started! Now after 20 years, it’s still beautifully thriving! Always cook up the classic “pollo horneado con morro” (roasted chicken and rice and pigeon peas), and DO NOT forget the yuca con cebolla (cassava with onions). Check them out asapito!!
Gondres Bakery

Take the walk after school, grab some pastellitos and pick up small personal desserts… Or be the hit at the next gathering you attend! You will bless everyone with an authentic Dominican cake made from magic; Meringue frosting topped on yellow cake and loved up on with piña or guayaba filling will be gone before you get your piece!
